balls hAve durability and wear out. when it in the red, it means it's close to wearing out.

Balls have a lifespan (except for Starters).
The is a "HITS" meter to the right of the ball in the in-game menu. It will turn red when it is running low on hits. Most balls typically last anywhere from 2-10 rounds.

Speaking of ball durability ... are the ratings linear?
I.E. Does a 3 durability ball last twice as long as a 1.5 durability ball?
(assuming you don't get it wet or feed it after midnight)
