i dont putt on legend greens very often , thankfully.  putting at olympic.  17 ft, 6 inches elevation loss.  8 ft. of power.  goes 24 feet.  i understand the downhill putts on these greens really run, but how does one calculate how freaking hard to hit em so yur not coming back with a missable putt?

If it is the hole i am thinking of it is a very nasty putt. The hole is cut on the top of a mound. You need to dribble that putt in the front of the hole or you are left with a 2 putt for bogie coming back, as you have found out.

If it's either the 5th or 17th greens (which I expect it would be), most of the slope is right before the cup. If you therefore hit at around 70-75% power (as it seems you've done PMB), you'll be racing by the cup as soon as your ball reaches that slope with too much pace.

You're looking at a trickler down the hill if you want to lag it in; think of 2nd at Oakmont and play it in exactly the same way to get close.

A large part of putting comes down to knowing exactly where the slopes are on a green and how it'll affect your ball. The bottom of the hill on 11 at St Andies is a great example on a legend tourn speed green; you think you need to smash it up there to get it close but in reality it requires a similar pace to a neutral speed putt (around 76-77% after slope) due to the downslope at the top of the crest of the hill.

    17 - 6 x 8 = X

    17 - 48 = X

    -31 = X

    :D

    -31 = X

And interestingly enough, -31 Celsius = -24 Fahrenheit.

Looks like the new math is metric......  ; )

Some of these holes are quite slick.Beth page comes to mind.Cant remember the hole because i try to forget it.But we all know it High elevated green with a ski slope. If you happen to get above it say 30 ft never aim for the hole. With a left break turn right face.Putt the ball just past the distance to the hole .If its 10 feet putt 12 feet then sit back eat a hot dog, drink a beer and hope you get next to the hole.

I use this formula & with a little give or take works quite well

    17-6=11 divide by 1.4 = 7.8   **     TM greens I will use 1.3  **     & VFG  1.2

    Hope that helps
