I've been told to use full back spin when using my driver,as it will fly higher and farther.Do you do this with just a head wind or with any wind condition ? also, what about iron shots. Thanks

    To maximize distance:

With a headwind (against me), I use topspin.
Exceptions would be if I need to carry a hazard or if the landing area is sloping uphill, in which case I usually apply no apin adjustment or only slight topspin.

With a tailwind (from behind), I use backspin.

It's a matter of trial and error I suppose.

Most advice here calls for bs w/ tailwind and ts w/ headwind.

I 4 1 (G20, WGT SD ball) apply bs with any wind with good success: averages close to 300 yds.

Iron shots seem to be shortened by bs, especially towards an upslope.

I think you may find that in a cross wind full back spin will be affected by the wind more. With a tail wind or head wind the ball will float a bit longer and possibly land softer with less roll out but it is trial and error as alosso said.

Here's a helpful thread with a long discussion about backspin and it's advantages:

TL;DR - Backspin manipulates your shot in many different ways. It's best to learn each way and to implement different strategies for what the shot calls for.

    Hope this helped, good luck!
