If your bad timing is always one way (either always too early or always too late), you can try playing to that problem by aiming further right (if you tend to draw/hook) or by aiming further left if you are always fading/slicing from late hits.
But it becomes dangerous in crosswinds.
Learn a cadence count in your mind and remember that if you lose control, simply don't press the final "ding" trigger. It will count as a practice swing and not charge the stroke.
By purposely creating practice strokes before every shot, other than annoying co-players, if it helps you learn to strike more dings, the better. But watch out for the timer ...
