what is the best way to calculate hitting into wind or with the wind in general what would be the best way to hit with the wind pointing at say the 1.30 position also i would think there some sort of a simple equasion

In general, if you have direct in your face HEAD WIND lets say 15mph,

As a rule of thumb 1/2 it, say 7mph and ADD 7 Yards to your hit.

Generally the opposite can work with TAIL WIND, reduce your hit by 7 yards.

Sideways wind I wouldnt normally add or subtract anythig if it is directly sideways,

If the wind arrow is on an angle , simply adjust your 50% equation to less.

HOWEVER, The distance of your shot is a variable. More distance, more wind factor.

Higher lofted club, more wind factor

Chips and Punches are hadly affected by wind..

trial and error, but that should give you a starting point.

Cool post...still have probs with head/tail..Normally play it by ear,but that sounds a workable equation..Does it extrapolate for (say) the two hard par 5s on St Gs & St As(with 20/30mph) ??nice one Andy

sure. When your driving either slice or hook into the wind to keep it straight or to bend it around trees.

On a fairway shot, consider the head/ tailwind on your long iron, work out your distance and check the Camera for that distance, where will it land?

As opposed to belting a 3i 225y, if the wind is 20y in your face it will only reach 215 and maybe a little roll on.

Also on an approach to the green, most definitely factor it in.

I factor the wind and elevation for every shot there is wind and elevation.

But, I am still learning to hone this myself, i am a Junior Tour Master.

Here's a formula that works well: calculate everything relative to 200 y. Example:

    Dist. to cover: 150

Wind  straight in the face: 20

    (150/200)*20=15

    Hit it 165

If you have cross-winds (say from 1:30) use 0.7 times the above for both length correction AND deviation correction (Cos 45 = Sin 45 ~ 0.7).

    Hit'm straight!!! (After correction)
