I only ever really punch with my wedges. Unless i'm in 40-50% then i use the punch shot just to get the ball out. Using the punch with wedges is like having 3 extra clubs in your bag as they have different distances that usually fit nicely in between. You'll need to add a little more backspin than normal though Josh as the ball does tend to roll a bit more.

It's not as much about what it does, it's how far it does it and how it gets there. Learn the punch shot to fill in yardage gaps in your coverage like D pointed out. I carried 4 wedges up to Legend and had 20 different coverages where you need it most, just with the wedges.  The punch shot made that work along with the other shots.

Learn the shot by the distance you can cover with it. It isn't as affected by wind as much, is a good out of any kind of rough (once you learn the shot) and on courses without trees you can get some really nice long rolls. Good to use when the wind is howling. 3W punch out of 40-50 is an excellent recovery shot.

A retired player once told me over 3 years ago, when the Satin64 was the bomb, that the punch with it was the most valuable shot he had. I was so new I'd never even considered it. Needless to say, today it's one of my favorite shots.

Incidentally, that player was AvatarLee. :-)

For me this game is all about the 3 Ps, punching, pitching and putting. I will play the punch shot as an approach as often as I can from 85 yards in, it also comes in very handy if you are in the crap 20 - 70 yards from the green. The 50 yard lob is a great club for getting you out of trouble through punching, without doubt the most valuable club in the bag other than the putter.

Punch is invaluable. It performs differently on each set of clubs, so I would learn it:)

I remember that post and one by Jake that changed the way I played my wedges.I may even rely on it too much.Because it is not affected as much by the wind I would rather have a punch wedge appoach shot than a full wedge.

Echoing what has been said so far.

I generally only use it with my wedges. With a decent wedge and good ball it can stop dead and also spin back. As said before it's like 2 clubs in one...For instance a 50 yard wedge with a punch option will go 41 yards and a 75 yard wedge on punch goes 62 yards, 2 clubs that go 41,50,62 and 75 yards. It's the perfect bridge between the gap in your wedge yardages.

    Hi

I use the CG16 64 wedge for punches almost anytime its possible. Have learnt that with no Back Spin at all it will stop on a dime (except St. Andrews probably) so I use it even down to 25yds for punching.

As this club has nice movements, when punch is selected and you give full swing u will get that 50yds. Take one movement down and you get 45yds, two movements 40yds, etc., etc.

Then if I need a stupid 37yarder for example I just go in between the movements. Its a saviour for those fairway shots that come up short on a long par 5 or recovering from an error.

Cannot thank enough the Tour legends and legs that helped me find that out

    Happy Punching
