Hi uofsmba, the dot gives the ball spin. Putting the dot at the top makes the ball spin forward, and putting it at the bottom gives the ball backspin.
Where abouts is the dot on the ball on the screen?

The dot is on the ball graphic itself located in the bottom right hand corner of the game display. Within the ball you'll see a dot you can grab and move up or down to impart spin and loft.
