What is the best way to get out? What I usually try and do is just wedge it out sideways back to the fairway, but even a fully hit punch with a pitching wedge that says 108 yd, only goes straight sideways and 10 feet. Should I try punching with a longer iron?

Yep, you can do that. Long Iron punch from 60/70% deep rough gives you above 100yds distance, depending the circumstances. Carefull though with hazards, ballflight is low and rather short.

Depends on the situation and what actually lies ahead. I often use a 7 iron punch from a lie like that with full top spin, but the priority is to get the ball back in play - don't get too greedy.

Some occasions a 3I punch can work if you can ensure the ball will land on the f/w, wont go that far and will fly low and run.

But a punch with a wedge, full top spin should go more than 10 feet and really helps to hit the ding on these shots.
