Why is it that the distance pointer of a tee is always short of your max club distance?

Strange question but do you always move the pointer to match max club distance?

It's more of an aiming tool then anything else.  The distance indication is a good way to know how far you need to carry water or hazards.  Because of this the distance shown off the tee is just going to be a standard distance.
