At what lie is chipping pointless with the starter clubs?  or is there ever a point unless you have a perfect lie

I had 40-50% lie and 2 times i hit about 8 yards of power and both times the ball went less than 1 yard (i was about 1 yard from the green).  This is not representative of real golf (dont get me started on pitches that go 0 ft)

am i just wasting my time?  is this the way the get you to pay for clubs, making them useless around the greens?

Chipping is a waste of time unless you are within a yard of the green and the surface you land on is flat. Full shot or flop are much better options.

Learn the flop. Is such a beautiful shot when executed right.  With full bs wont roll to much.  And when you flop make sure you aim left of flag stick.  Go to a practice round and work on it. With the mulligan option and free balls you can really get a good idea of the flop.

Miss Fish is so right- "Chipping is a waste of time unless you are within a yard of the green and the surface you land on is flat"  And what ever you do by attention to what she says.  She knows her game rather well..Have gotten many good tips from her post.

The chip shot in WGT is like the shot you'd get with one of those strange 'chipper' clubs that were around for a while, like a lofted putter. The ball pops up in the air a few inches, then lands and rolls out to hole. If you were a yard into the thick stuff then a chip is the wrong shot. I only use it from edge of green or fringe.

Pitches going 0ft. Sounds like serious rough you were in, a pitch won't move in some types of rough and/or you were trying to get too much out of, what is, a recovery shot. Try the punch shot instead.

Also....the shortest route to the hole is seldom a straight line, sometimes backwards or sideways is the way to save par.

Pitching can be just as effective too.

Work out the yardages for each of your wedges, l have the three Clevelands:

56 degree wedge maximum pitch distance 33yds= 8 avatar movements @ 4.12 yds

60 degree wedge maximum pitch distance 25yds =8 avatar movements @ 3.12 yds

64 degree wedge maximum pitch distance 17yds =8 avatar movements @ 2.12 yds

Obviously take into account rough style and lie, and obviously downhill and uphill pitches and allowing for roll out.

Have a few 'practise swings' slowly moving the said club back working out the distance with each movement and club.

The chip shot is the most likely type of shot to hole out over and above the flop. You will always get close with a flop, but the chip has more chance of going in.

2 yards in the rough is the maximum you can play it from. With starter clubs and WGT balls though, you will struggle to control the shot, especially if downhill.

Think of it like a lofted putt.

That might as well be in hieroglyphicsfor me, I've never used avatar movements. Good advice though and there's a great buzz to be had holing out a good pitch shot.

    Hi Guys and Gals,

After so more 'testing'  i wish WGT just made an statement that said

"You can not chip, pitch or flop with any realistic abilities until you upgrade from the starter set"

Would have saved me some time instead of getting mad at flops that go 120% of max distance against the wind and up a hill

The starter wedges are fine for chipping from the fairway or fringe. Once you're in a deep lie the starter clubs are fine for hitting pitch shots and flop shots. I use pitch quite a lot playing in starter club UL rounds and have found with a little time spent learning what they can do, they work very well.

All the equipment from starter to best available works very well if you practice with it enough.

    +1!

Only problem is that beginners, naturally starting with that set, don't have the experience to judge their performance and not the skills to ding them enough. I fared much better on the second approach after a year with custom clubs than I did in the first place.
