    Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could someday allow players to use a driver off a fairway (or rough) while we play? It would be fun to see how hitting a driver off a fairway (or rough) could improve our game.. Any info you could provide would be appreciated.

You can punch a driver from the fairway/rough but the trajectory is very low, which is useful for scooter shots under trees etc, but as much of the distance travelled is roll you need to be sure that the ball will hit fairway shortly after impact to achieve any distance, trying to roll through rough will lead to an early stop.

Both shots work well if you have a steep downslope ahead of you and as Scott says you need a clear roll out area too.

In real golf it was a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very rare situation where I would hit Driver out of rough (not counting green side).

In the fairway on a long par 5, I would entertain the possibility of hitting Driver for my second shot if I had a perfect lie.

The game of golf entails making a lot of decisions based on course management and risk avoidance (knowing when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, and when to walk away)
