It may be a good idea to show how many approximate 'hits' are left in a particular ball. It could easily be displayed in inventory. This would solve a host of problems:
-nobody could complain that their ball was replaced with a 'range ball.'
-balls used for practice rounds could spend the final few hits.
-most of us have 'used' balls, and have no idea what life is left.
