  I have just gotten to Master tier and decided I need a 3W (I ditched my starter one a while back and have made do without one or a hybrid at all, nothing between driver and the irons, and I have used 4 wedges - but that is for a different day).

  I might upgrade the irons to the L59 G25 Pings (I am only a couple of levels away from that) as they seem pretty good and have high loft, so was wondering about a decent 3W that you may have used to complete that distance set. My driver is the R1 which you can whack a fair bit. My current 3i hits 200 yards, the L59 G25's 3i hits at 210. 

  As we well as recommendations for 3w, I have noticed some 3w's are described as fairway woods in the shop. Silly question but does that mean you can (or cannot) drive them off the tee as well? Sometimes a 3w off the tee is suitable for me.

  the 3-wood that matches the ping irons you are looking at will do very nicely and all 3-woods work well from the tee

  From my experience you can drive 'em off the tee. Might likely get more distance off the tee then compared to the same 3W off the FW (natch, rough+)

  Fairway wood means that they are not suitable from rough. ok for tee shots and fairways

  Some players talk of using 3W from a certain lie of rough, and many of them might have a rewarding method, usually using the punch shot w/ top spin. I haven't mastered the proper yardage or total method yet, but I've been testing it out.

  It all depends on the kind of shot and 3W (brand, level, ball, situation, % lie, technique, spin, etc.) Other players may simply not use it as a matter of preference.

  3W punch from the rough

  alanti's 3W punch from the rough -6th paragraph down " 3W punch from rough, depending on the lie - always think percentages, can be a great recovery shot"

  3W from the rough but the replays are all expired. "3wd punch with top spin works from deep rough, for the Birdie"

  3WD from the tee works perfectly, it's also an impoverished student's driver replacement (below Master).

  IMHO there's no alternative to a high trajectory, the G25's being the first of those clubs. OTOH, it won't be your last clubs if you're going for Legend, but it's a long way to their suitable clubs (lvl 83 for the better G25's @255,000 XPs).

  The 3WD punch(!) is playable from rough until 40%. Take care to find FW after the shortened carry, then it will bump&run forever...

  The Taylormade R11 or R11S 3 woods are inexpensive and have good precision and forgiveness.

  Thanks all, I settled for the R11 3W, its got good stats that I need. Which means I have to ditch one of my wedges! This is painful!
