Actually, they will tell you that the speed is only out of the house.  If you look at my speed test, it is to Charters test site.  I use it all the time just for a comparison to the system working correctly.

I can go to other test sites and see many different speeds.  If I use a server that is Atlanta based, it will be close.  Going up the East Coast or to San Fran. these speeds drop.  It is to be expected as to the number of servers it goes through.  Then again, depends on the time of day.  Traffic.

Short story is, start fast, end up faster.  Start slow, well you probably get the idea.

Good luck, Gary.  Hope all works well.  Just make sure it is a docsis 3 modem.

I use theirs(modem).  Yes there is a monthly charge.  Within the last couple of weeks they had to change mine out.   Download speed was fine, upload stopping to a crawl.  Makes like not working, but showed had a connection. That is why it is fresh in my mind about the lights on the old and new Arris.  Didn't cost me a thing for them to do that, as it is theirs, not mine.

That is maybe why they are telling you only 66 meg.  Att maybe only be a docsis 2 modem.  If I remember correctly back when I first got the 100 meg service, it was slow.  Nowhere near 100.  Called about it, they looked up and saw what modem I had(not Arris, different make).  Said it was docsis 2, would not be able to get 100 out of it.  They set me up with a self install modem and said throw my old 1 out.  Hooked up, called to activate new mac address.  Instant 100.

Gary, router is something different.  Mine here is a Linksys.  Outside world to house, modem(charter), router(linksys), computers(2 emachines, 2 custom built gaming).

Nope, don't use the gaming for here.  Might work better if I did.  I7's with good cards.

Unless you have a combination modem/router.  Personally, I believe that is a bad idea.  Why you ask?  If you have seperate unit and you have a problem, you can always do directly to the modem with 1 computer.  If the problem disappears, the router is defective.

If you need a wireless router, a wireless access point, or a 4 port hardwire let me know...I have some older Linksys you can have....I also have a new Linksys wireless(used it about a month) I'd take 1/2 of whatever they sell for...and don't buy any CAT 5 wires, I have a bag full of them, literally a bag full of 3' to 6'[, you can have as many as you need...lol

Not to mention it is best to have a "hardware firewall" too...

Went back to AT&T ........Had nothing but headaches with Charter. Customer Service is  terrible, Installer very  nonprofessional . Had to tell him how to run, and where to run the line, and had to help him run it. Then left me with no net cause he had another appointment . Then they tell me email has been down all day, 8 years with AT&T and never nothing went down.

Wow, that is exactly the same thing that happened to my oldest daughter, and one of my best friends, the guy left before getting every thing working!

I have heard so many similar stories from people it amazes me that Charter is still in business in this area....the worst part is now you have to deal with the billing dept., I'd bet a 6pack they still try to charge you for all kinds of BS...I feel for ya Woodo.
