Instead of a meter to show hits left on the ball why can't it be a number counting down.

It might be too much transparency.

There's no transparency in the tiering system,

little transparency in the levels & CC levels,

no transparency of prices (new meter boost),

    misinformation concerning credits' monetary value...

    (incomplete)

Less information means more unfounded hope and expectation by the customers, to the company's advantage.

    In one word: Business habits.

You're correct on transparency, alosso. By providing the current meter instead of a counter the company leaves open the option to squeeze more money out of customers in a way the customer will probably never realize is happening.

For example, a ball could be dropped in durability only 1% or 2%. With the current system the customer probably won't notice they are now getting 117 or 118 hits out of that Callaway instead of the 120 we used to get. In the meantime WGT increases their profit by another 1 or 2% on every sleeve used.

If they went to a counter that would actually give customers something useful as a reference point they would be removing that opportunity to gouge the customer that little bit more. Reduce the number of hits you start with on the screen and everyone will see it.

No one has to wait for WGT to make a change.

Using a piece of paper and a pencil, or a text file on their computer, players can keep track of how many hits the get from each ball they play. In fact, I bet there are players who do just that.
