LOL-I can tell you what works for me but WGTIcon is the man. He wrote that Chip and Pitch Tips back when he was a commoner like us and that's the best reference.
If you're in that deep rough you are rarely, if ever, going to make a fabulous recovery shot and save the score. You have to minimize the damage. Take your medicine, re aim into the fairway closest to you and punch your way back into play. A punch shot with top spin is what I use. Do not forget to move the aimer. The shot isn't going to go very far and since the aim usually defaults at the pin you could have more misery on that line to the cup.
This is just my conservative way of getting out of trouble. There are probably other ways to handle it and I'm sure you will see tips from others but I'd rather take the par or bogie and move on. Hope this helps. GL
