How about a pause feature in multiplayer games? Phone rings, bathroom break - many reasons to have a non-penalty pause, maybe one per player per nine holes, and of a limited time/ And maybe it can be withdrawn from any player who abuses it, or limited to so many per 10 rounds, etc. Lots of ways to configure it.
