    Hi Y'all,

Just curious if it makes sense to do a flop shot out of the sand? Or can it be done? If so, is there an optimum distance such as 5 to 15 yards? I appreciate any feedback.

See you on the Tee :)

    I flop out of sand.

But I aim left 5 feet and hit the ding.

On #15 at Bethpage for example, a full 20 yard flop is perfect.

Seems to give a lot of roll, can't get close...but sometimes the only way over the lip.

Thank you all for your replies! Do I still adjust the distance of my shot like a typical sand shot or do I need to add more as it is a flop out of the sand? Thanks for you help and feedback :)

I flop out of greenside bunkers 99% of the time, when I'm 7 to 15 yards, up to 20 yards if there's a downhill slope. And like John said, aim left and ding, otherwise there's a good chance, the ball won't get out, it loses that much distance with a click at the left marker.

Edit: 19y flop (or 20y with the CG) with full bs should stop anywhere from 8 (if played onto an elevated green to 11, 12 yards, while the 29y CG goes from 16 to 21, depending on slope and green speed.

Thanks for the info MK but what is "ding"? I know, probably a silly  question but I am new here :) Does "ding" refer to hitting the impact meter at the precise spot?

depending on lie (where in the Bunker) what course I'm playing a flop, punch or full shot is needed to get out. Best advice is keep notes on what course, hole and which shot works. some won't let you flop and others don't like a punch so take notes !
