Is it advisable to move the red dot to the bottom of the golf ball to get underneath it when trying to get out of the deep rough or deep sand? Also, is it advisable to just get back to the fairway on the side vs aiming forward toward the green?

Lastly, as I understand it using higher lofted clubs is advised when trying to get out of the rough or sand, but there have been a few occasions when I've used nothing but my wedges with max power, & hit precisely dead center on the power meter, only to find my golf ball going a few yards back remaining in the rough. I then have to hit my ball 3 or 4 more times to get back to the fairway or green dramatically increasing my score. Any suggestions?

A L92 Master with Starter equipment - patient and courageous!
Alas, I wonder that you didn't find out yourself in 6 1/2 years.

I'd like to advise you to buy some top wedges, but that's obiously not your way to play.

For Starters, from memory with cobwebs:

    - put the 3WD back in your bag - it's much better than the 3H.
(hmm - was it vice versa?)

    - best club in your bag is the Starter putter.

    - Use full backspin (dot down) most of the time - I did on drives, too.

    - Expect less from rough or bunkers and shoot harder - you'll be less disappointed.

Thus, try to get back to the fairway the short way, and avoid chips&pitches from %% lies. Flops are a no-go!

Shot power below 70% is almost unplayable - avoid it, play longer and play back if necessary.

Shots going backwards are a speciality of Oakmont rough - you'll have to avoid those lies, otherwise swallow and accept. Next game is only a few minutes away.
