Having played St Andrews a few times, I can attest that depending on where the ball lands, it can roll a long way.
Not sure what you mean by having the SW closer to real. If you mean bunker play, I agree but conversely we do not need the game to be easier.
I an not a maths professor, but if you hit the ball 31 yards, I cannot see how the ball could have possibly gone longer or shorter than that 31 yards, just sayin....
But the key is calculations and notes - remember the meter scale is not linear and the roll out also depends on spin and attributes of your ball. Also pay attention to the shot type and club....many players get caught out by using the caddies recommendation!
