It most frequently occurs on Oakmont #9...front greenside bunker...my normal shot is to play just left of the bunker...hit full back...and usually end up a yard or two from the pin...in the last few months I have found that if I fail to ding the shot I get severely punished...it goes 7 yards to the right or left either way...these incidents have cost me several games and credits...it happens on other occasions too, but I actually play for the bunker on Oak #9 as a rule of thumb...while I know the answer is to ding the darn shot, but does it really have to punish me that badly?
you could try laying up to a wedge or hit into rough. generally, bunker shots from 30/40 or 40/50 are very tough. essentially the ball is buried by quite a bit, so any miss will amplify it.
many times when i missed ding, i whiffed, so, yes if you chose to hit into bunker (a good play on that hole), then make sure you know the punishment
