I was trying to remember back to last year.  It seemed that one day had conditions that weren't too difficult other than the championship green speed and the second day had more severe conditions.  I might be thinking about the British Open but I would suspect that WGT is going to do something similar to that this year.  If so I think the 1st round average might be 67 and second over 70.  Keep in mind that there is no restarts in the actual tournament, you have to finish instead of restarting every time you don't birdie the first four holes.

Actually, i think last year cut was 63 or 64>? and low score was 57.

This year it's 60 and low score is 54? I think it's still all bunched up:)

    Competition probably stiffer too.

I just threw down a 62.  My best yet.

I don't know if I have a better round in me but  60 seems doable now.

If the cut goes to 59 I'm gona haveta throw in the towel.

    TDHarvey:

Can't wait to see the conditions during the two championship rounds.

It will be fun to watch the championship unfold, as you see Bollie, AvvieLee and Tess drown under the pressure of...

    SINGLE PLAY!!

    Lol.

My best is 61 so far with two of those.  In the second one I missed 2 putts inside 8 feet and three putted from about 10 feet.  I can see possibly getting down to 59 with a good putting round, something I struggle with but when the tournament begins I suspect that WGT will have a few surprises for us.  I believe that last year in the Open Championship at St Andrews, WGT introduced the new pin placements for the tournament so I suspect that the pins we are all used to playing on Congressional might not be what we see come the actual tournament and you can believe that the championship green speed and possibly severe wind will come out of hiding as well.

For those of you who are really interested in the difference between the qualifying conditions and the tournament conditions in 2010, you might like this.   Here are the scores from the Deviations Country Club for both of last year's major tournaments.   The avg difference per round for Oakmont was 6 strokes (see pink average at the bottom).   The avg differences for St A.  5 strokes for round 1, and 9 strokes for round 2.

This year conditions are even easier (in my opinion), the players are better and the addition of the new clubs and balls are why the scores for qualifying are so low.   I think with 27 days still to go the cut will be 59.   Yes the scores in the final 2 rounds will be higher but ... given all the practice and new equipment ... you'll still see very low scores.

For those of you who wonder how people can shoot so low ... it's years (yes years) of practice and several thousand (yes several  thousand) games.

    Thanks for the breakdown, LV.

It must also be stressed that the qualifying conditions now are extremely gentle--no wind, smooth and relatively slow greens--but this can be seen as helping give weaker players more encouragement and a shot at posting a good score. Of course, at the same time that drives down the scores of the top players as well, so the end result won't be much different.

Last year the Oakmont qualifier was so discouraging because of the slick greens. No excuse, but 5-putting the 2nd green was disheartening.

Zag said it right, the conditions for Congressional are very tame.

Last year at Oakmont, the had the most difficult greens that WGT has seen at a speed that made them more difficult.  It also seemed to me that we didn't have as much time to play it but that might not be correct.

The green speed at Congressional isn't even up to tournament speed, it is tournament light I guess.  Plus we all have a full year of back tees, tournament greens, etc. that I think have hardened us to the long shots and fast greens.  I know that having played the back tees for a while now, I'm not intimidated by the long shots into the greens at Congressional as I was when WGT moved the tees back on St Andrews and Kiawah.  I think the qualifying is meant to soften us up for what is to come but for now very tame.
