  I would like to suggest that when a player is putting from the fringe, that the flagstick is automatically removed prior to the ball getting to the cup.  This would negate ANY chance of a player's otherwise good shot (read, swing speed, etc..) being negated by the ball hitting the pin and bouncing away.  I have had this happen numerous times, and it is frustating to have an otherwise perfect shot ruined by an easily solved problem.

  All you have to do is click on the flag on the upper right hand corner of the screen to remove the flagstick. However if a putt does hit the stick and bounce very far away it was most likely hit too hard and would have hit the back of the cup and bounced away any way.

  There's an award you can get for hitting the Flagstick, which means extra bonus points when you get them.

  As well as that, you may still make the putt and get the hit the flagstick award.
