We have a forum thread on - how did this not go in...I was thinking and came up with this...anyone in here have any additional thoughts?

Someone with more "tech" or CGI familiarity could speak to it directly but while we are kicking ourselves looking at what should have fallen and rightfully so based on the "image" we see, but the "code for the stroke made" does not match "perfectly" with the line of the putt we see.

As a result, the trace line is slightly off from the "path determined based on the input criteria" provided by the power of the putt, the ding of the putt, etc.  All of this gives the illusion of what should have fallen but the "trace line" doesn't coincide perfectly with the code so it doesn't register as in the hole...

We stand there saying NO WAY that has to be in the hole, but it is really a "variance" or "imperfection" of the software to "perfectly reflect" the output.  If it had reflected the line perfectly with the code the entire trace line would have been seen "above the hole rather than seemingly going through part of the hole.

In this case, since the putt appeared to "catch the lip" and deviate some but not enough to circle the hole or do a merry go round and fall in.

The example I can think of outside of this that may help is the scene towards the end of the movie Gladiator.  Parts of that scene with the lions (1:25, 1:46, 2:07 are a few that look hokey btw no tigers were harmed in the filming...) just don't appear right and they really mess with my eyes.  This was obviously a CGI part of the movie and can explain the odd image or blurry or visual miscues I pick up in the scene, but it seems to reflect a similar dynamic as this.  Quite simply...it's WGT and their CGI department hasn't perfected the output, but they have it close enough that 95% of the time you believe it, the other 5% it has us saying---REALLY???

Okay, that is just my take.  My head and eyes need to rest!

It is known that WGT tolerances are +/- 1/2" on what you see. Knowing that is the only way I can explain certain misses. Examples of that are often seen when your ball is lying on short grass very close to the edge of the fairway and the lie says rough.

Aiming at the edge of the cup when putting could actually have you aiming wide of it.  :-(

look at this one it's on top of the hole almost dead center.

In the hole but not in the hole

WOW, I had that exact same thing happen to me last week in an AS game. Don't remember the hole but I know I was hitting a low iron (9/pw) and the flag was out. There's no question yours seems impossible even with that 1/2" off bit. That was in the hole! And the ball can't get stuck between the flag and the ball unless the stick is in crooked.

I agree and saw that in our forum.  I shared a similar one, but the camera angle only adds to the illusion I believe.  If the "code" indicated a hole out it would have been a hole out, the CGI "imperfection" of adequately reflecting the result is part of the problem we view.

It reminds me of one of the holes on Kiawah.  I know I have seen it in the mobile platform can't remember if it shows the same on the desktop but when you go to a particular camera angle on that particular hole -  you avatar literally appears to be hovering about 6 -12 inches above the green!  If you return to that camera angle to watch your putt the ball will likewise roll "above the green" before it reaches the hole.  But, we are not paying for perfection, just an enjoyable experience right....

If I see that camera angle on Kiawah again, I will try to take a screen grab...

A lot of times, I reverse the view to check. Amazing how many times the dots are not the same on both sides

another way of looking at it might be this...we are not trying to play what we believe and think should be perfect shots according to the wind, elevation, green, etc.  ... we are trying to find the "sweet spot" for the "code that calculates" what is the perfect shot that will get us as close as possible...

why else would so many spend hours fine tuning spread sheets, calculations, mapping clubs, etc... the game is based on "numbers and calculations" so aside from the "variability and variance that is also built into the game" which can be taken into account to a lesser degree, some can virtually crack open the cookie jar.  it is possibly why some of the elite players have lamented about "cheaters" and "cheat software."

even "feel" players are basing their "feel" on potentially hundreds or thousands of rounds played to the point they not only have a very good idea what the expected outcome will be but they know it will get them close enough to have a reasonable birdie putt.  Having thousands of rounds of "experience" does not make you a "feel" player it means you have played long enough that you no longer need to do the calculations to get you close to the hole.

and...you know when the "dots on the green" are misleading you when they appear to go every which way.  not saying I have it figured out either, but I can say I have learned a lot along the way with the help of others and watching videos, and hitting balls.  when I started I might have called myself a "feel" player, but I don't feel I could say that now...
