Yes , this is true cubs...funny thing is though cubs , is that the vast majority of those who "preach" this ,(other than very few) scramble and sand save
at and/or
well below 60 %. Umm, maybe a 5'th wedge will do the trick.
....Sayin', Ace
That's because they don't get as much practice at those shots cos they hit it on the green more.
The reason I guess that 3 wedges are recommended is that you want to hit a full power full swing shot so you know how far the ball will go.
I have a wedge that hits 60yds, but used to have problems with shots of 40 - 45yds because I had to work out how much power to give for the conditions (wind / slope etc).
I was toying with the idea of buying a 50 yd wedge, so I can play a nearly full power shot for these distances, but decided against it. Instead I just try to leave 55 to 60 yds to the pin so my existing wedge will do the trick.
At the moment I have wedges that hit 49yds (punch), 60yds(full), 63 yds (punch), 77 yds (full), 96yds (punch) and 115 yds(full). Add either backspin or top spin and they cover more of the distances in between.
Remember you can also play pitch and flop shots with these clubs too.
Just my 3 cents worth.
By the way, if you look at TheAceFactor's stats for sand and scrambling saves, she has over 70% for both and she has a hybrid so I guess you will have to consider both points of view.
For me though, the addition of the 3rd wedge improved my scores.
