pdxpack:
Oakmont hole 4 - 63 yards out - 30/40% rough - crosswind 18 mph but a little against shot - hit 80yd wedge full with full backspin - travels 86 yds - ????
... and...???
The "lay of the green" and the "elevation difference" from your lie must be taken into consideration, as well.
On Oakmont, there are very few areas on its greens that need not be considered during approach.
Did you forget to account for this landing area?
If so, try this next time...
Switch to the reverse "chip" or "putter" view and "scan" the area of the green (with the target tool) where you're expecting your shot to land... as well as along its further path to the hole. If there's a slope, it needs to be accounted for in your pre-shot determination of the correct distance for that approach shot.
Furthermore, the elevation at the point where the ball contacts the surface of the green will have to be noted and applied before you even begin to determine these slope adjustments.
Note that it's NOT the elevation "at the hole" that needs consideration... it's the elevation at the point of ball contact with the green that matters most.
Naturally, this isn't just "an Oakmont thing". Try it on the other courses, too.
Hope this helps, and GL.

;)
edit: almost missed a most obvious miscalculation...
From 30-40 rough, the ball won't have much backspin, if any at all... and more-than-likely, it will come out of the rough "hotter" than normal. The shot will not gain the height that it normally does... which translates into the wind having less effect on its flight.
Also, when using a full swing, the % of a lie in the rough has less effect on its reduction of a shot's length. This is probably due to the clubhead speed enabling more efficient "cutting" through the grass/weeds/whatever.
"Practice" is the key here.
