yes, you have top remove flagstick before hitting the shot and it will likely have much better chance of going in. the button for it on top right corner of your screen

Yup, the shot was moving fast enough to hit the stick and bounce back onto the lip. Definitely would have gone in if the flag was pulled. keep in mind, there are also times when the flag is your friend :p
