  So is my assumption that you have to buy better equipment to get better correct?  It seems to me that you can win credits in tournaments but there is not much chance of that if you don't buy credits to begin with.

  It is easier if you invest but not essential. There's no reason why you can't just play against people of similar ability or equipment.

  Just like in real life, you get better with focused practice. Tiger Woods could take walmart clubs and beat the pants of 99% of golfers out there, where I could but 5k custom clubs and balls and not stand a chance.
