Some enlightment please. Was playing an Alt shot and my partner hit into an immovable obstruction on # 18 St Andrews.  Screen flashed FREE DROP!!!. It took his ball and sent me back to the tee box for the 2nd shot to the green. Is this correct??. Shouldn't I have been directed to a free drop area for second shot and not back to the tee.

    where was the obstruction?

thee only possibles that i can see there are the bridge and the road. if i've ever finished on the road the software quite rightly drops me just behind the road.

    - wgt being the committee have designated the road as an immovable obstruction. if you go play the course for real then the road is an integral part of the course, thus you must play the ball as it lies.

but given that this rule needs no real user interaction then it should have been implemented properly, nearest point of relief and one club length.

did the same to me, some 'FREE' drop!

It was along the right edge close to the fence, at least for me.

i wondered if someone was going to say the right hand fence.

As that is a boundary fence, there should be no free drop if your near it, but i guess the software isn't good enough to handle obstructions.

while this is in no way correct........

given there should be no free drop, sending you back to the tee for your second shot will allow you to put the ball into a position to reach the green in three. the same would be the probable outcome given a restricted swing/stance from next to the boundary fence.

    Hi

There are few holes where it happens. Sometimes you get a free drop and other times you don't. I am not 100% sure of what is determines that but I assume it's on a angle how it hits the spot and few other variables. Mostly it happens on kiawah #2, and sta 1 and 18.
