JLetson1:
Playing Best of Bandon, hole #2, 136yds from tee, elev drop 21ft, net yardage around 128yds. Dead 6 0'clock headwind at 23mph, calculate needed distance around 144yds. Hit 8 iron, 145yds, no spin, ball carries 144 yards and lands 42 feet (14 yards) past the pin. WTF. How can you possibly account for that? Any tips, ideas, etc.
My 2 cents:
heavy wind calculation is an entirely different beast than moderate/low. I started using this formula recently, and it has held true mostly. Try it OP and see if it can helps you:
Wind strength = avg wind X (distance/225) X angle factor.
If you don’t know what angle factors are, go to MistressCossette’s page. The chart is somewhere within her immensely long post.
Furthermore, ball spin ratings affect calculations. The higher the spin, the more distance is needed in your calculations. Also, dead-on or near dead-on headwinds affect distance more, so your calculations will have to consider that as well.
Example: #8 STA, 207 yds, 5ft drop, and 26-28 mph headwind at 7 o’clock. AF for 7 o’clock is 0.866. Wind strength is 27 x (207/225) x 0.866 = 21.51 so roughly 22. 207+22=229. With the TM TPX5 lv48, my 3I FS is 227 from the tees. But because it’s heavy wind and near dead-on, I would need to reduce the spin to around 50%.
