I might end up getting the 115 and 80 clevelands and leaving the 100 out.  A lot depends on how I like the partial shot capability of the PW.

good choice IMHO,  I started with the 60, 80 and 100 yd cleveland set up,  dropped the 100 and replaced with the 115,   the punch shot of the "115" club is 96 which is close enough for me to cover the 100 yd shot.

Yes, the hybrid is a great club but from my experience, the need for the 3rd wedge is much greater than the hybrid.

You can't compare RL golf to WGT as I doubt anyone here is an avg 62 player IRL ? :)
I too carry hybrids in my bag (no 3i-4i) but I have zero use for it in WGT as long as I stay out of the rough. If I do hit the rough from LG tees odds are I wont make the green with any club and thus need to lay up and play a wedge to scramble par anyway.

Onto the topic though, punch shots. First of all different wedges make the shot behave differently. Satins need full bs to bounce once and check out, Clevelands do it without any bs at all. 54/56 wedges tend to roll some, while the more lofted don't. Of course topography of green and wind affect this as well.

The punch shot is also much less affected by wind and mishits, thus extremely accurate in yardage.

Carrying two wedges is not something I would ever consider myself, but for those who choose that I would just suggest whatever 2 Clevelands that fill the distances best (100/60 probably).

Also punching the Burner PW plays a lot like the Satin 54, max bs needed to get the bounce and check going, sensitive to downwind and downhill landing.

Punch shot? Pffft. Never use it. Silly, silly shot.

I can hit my 125 PW at 100 yds power in a 20 mph cross, tail, or headwind and get it inside your precious punch shot any day. Just saying :)

My range of wedges includes 125, 100, 75 and 50. I need not a punch shot in my arsenal to fill those gaps and neither do you.

Love to check down the 100 club for 80 yd shots, the 75 club for 55 yd shots and the 50 club for any shots 15 - 45 yds. Regardless of wind, pin location or bevel of the green.

Pitch shot? Ha, never. Chip? Maybe once in a blue moon. Flop? Useful shot now and then.

Just saying there are other ways at being successful at this game without the "horse with blinders" approach. No pun intended, naturally :)

    Best of luck out there

It's not all about filling gaps. it about keeping the ball low. It's about landing the ball in the most forgiving parts of the green. sure i can do that with the full shot, controlling distance with spin.. etc. sometimes it's just the right call with punch.

example BPB #6, back pin location. 90 yards to hole, 7 mph headwind

hmm.. I could hit my 105 yard wedge with back spin and spin it back to the hole. this works well, but i'm likely to end up hole high with a breaking putt, i'd rather be at 6 oclock below the hole. Plus there isn't a lot of green to work with behind the hole - if I hit the fringe who knows what could happen.

I could hit my 85 yard wedge with a lot of top spin. this will work nicely also, but if I miss the ding at all, I'm going to push/pull it like crazy.

I could punch my 105 yard wedge which is 87yards  with just a tickle of top spin, and even if i miss the ding a little it's going to be within 5 feet below the hole for an easy easy uphill bird.

It's just a subtle way of minimizing your miscues.

But, just like you say there are "other ways at being successful at this game".  I personally like to experiment with all sorts of shot types, so yeah I'm not just trying for "success" I'm trying to push my knowledge and to learn how to do things that are somewhat outside of the normal parameters of this game.

And no offence - your stats show you at 85% GIR... No wonder you don't know the value of a punch, or a pitch.. LMAO  We should team up for some Alt shot - I'll give your short game a workout.! :P

    Hi Panser,

My thoughts exactly ... I had the CG52 and sold it when I got the 2.0 irons ... big mistake. I thought I didn't need it with the 115yrd PW but I have alot of trouble with that club. I can stick the CG wedges, even partial shots but with the PW, I routinely miss by 6, 8 even 10 yrds short or long. I may be doing something wrong but I can't seem to dial in that club.

... long story short ... I think I'll swap the 52 wedge for my current 56.

Clearly different people have different ways of hitting the ball a certain distance, if it works for you then who is anyone else to tell you differently?

One thing I would say though is that the more shots you are capable of playing the better. Different situations require different kinds of shot. You can become very proficient getting close or out of trouble with one particular type of shot but it may not be the shot that gives you the best chance of holing out. If you take the time to become adept at punching, pitching, chipping and flopping, you will see your holed shots statistic rising quickly....

Just wanted to chime in and say "great discussion!"  It is these kinds of threads I find the most fascinating with various "what works" idea's.

From my allbeit limited experience, I tend to punch at uphill pins only using the small rollout as an excitement factor of "maybe I might drop it".  If the pin even hints at being downhill I find the punch a far more difficult shot than just letting her fly in.

Off topic, I've never bought a "full set" of irons in my life.  A new set of irons for me = 9i - 4i. Indeed, I don't think I've ever had a set of the same clubs - by variation OR Brand.  eg Calloway Tour X driver and a tight lies 3 wood.   My point is, I'm allowed to carry 14 clubs in whatever mix I feel is best.  Why not in WGT?  Is it meant as a game limiting thing?
