Another possibility is that you (pdb1) posted something in a thread (and checked the "email me replies" box), but your post got deleted by a moderator.
Paul, taking the Level 14 thread as an example, you could try posting in that thread, making sure you check the get replies checkbox before you post your message. Then go back to edit it and uncheck the get replies box before posting it again to see if that stops the responses. You might have to make another post in that thread afterwards to see if it has worked though.
