    I agree with that and that's how I'm playing the game now.  It does mean, however, that I find myself losing to opponents who take 4 foot "gimmes" if I miss my 2 foot putt......

    It looks like you're referring to coin games.  If you are playing in a coin room where a gimme is offered, take it.  It moves the game along, and you are breaking no unwritten rules or protocols by doing so.
