I think, and I stress think, it was that the female avatar swing is made up of more movements than the male so for people who judge distance by so many yards per movement a female one allowed more precise control over the shot.
This may have all gone out the window since the number of avatar movements were reduced to speed load times.
I reckon there's also just a lot of weirdos out there too though.
