I used to use 50% as a guideline for judging winds blowing directly into or from behind. I find that still works pretty well for hitting into the wind, but with downwind shots 50% isn't getting me close.

Tonight on St. George's, I had a 183yd shot with a 20mph downwind. I estimated a 163-yard shot. I hit my 7-iron (170 yards) with full spin, thinking it would travel 162 yards.

The shot went 223 yards. I realize English courses are hard and fast, but that shot went 40 yards farther. I also copied and printed Royboy1953's chart but nothing seems consistent.

I did fine with the winds until I got to the Master tier. Now I'm a Tour Master and things have gotten worse. I've practiced and still can't come up with anything that's remotely consistent on how to gauged downwind shots.

    Thanks for any advice.

So much in play, its a hard question to answer w/o going down a rabbit hole. Elevation, clubs/balls and spin all have a part here

Take a look at this under blog and find the part about wind...

You should also look into joining a country club- immensely helpful for this kind of information.

My short version is the advertised wind is based on ~ 200 yds. At 150 yds, I play approx 50-60% of wind. High headwinds I try to use as little spin as possible. There are charts and formula's abundant. Nothing beats a few hours on the practice range with high winds and mulligan button.
