Just asking out of curiosity.  I think the vast majority of putter move the arrow and do all sorts of calculations.

I hardly ever have to move the arrow unless it's an epic break.  I've played this game so long and so much now that the only thing I calculate is distance (which is fairly easy to do in your head) and the % off ding I have to hit (which I do by just looking at the screen and making an intuitive decision).

If there are others that putt off ding almost all the time, I think it would be fun to learn what your strategy is for that.  Swap tips, etc.  Maybe even discuss what putter stats are better for off dingers.

    Greetings AceHoler26,

My name is Dneirf, and I am an off-ding putter exclusively!

As with your method, I never move the aiming arrow unless there is an epic break.

I have mentally divided the strike zone of the swing meter on both sides of the Ding into twelve (12) sections, six (6) sections on the left side of the Ding, and six (6) sections on the right side of the Ding, as follows:

    Left side of the Ding = -1/4, -1/3, -1/2, -2/3, -3/4, -7/8.

    Right side of the Ding = +1/4, +1/3, +1/2, +2/3, +3/4, +7/8.

For non-epic breaks: Without moving the aiming arrow, every putt will be executed on, or sometimes about on, one of the twelve (12) off-ding sections in the swing meter strike zone, adding one (1) point of power for each section used in the swing meter strike zone.

For epic breaks: The aiming arrow will be moved in relation to one of the swing meter strike zone sections: -/+1/4, -/+1/3, -/+1/2, -/+2/3, -/+3/4, -/+7/8, adding one (1) point of power for each section moved. The putt will then be executed in relation to the same section the aiming arrow was placed.

For example, if with an epic break the aiming arrow was moved to the right of the Ding +3/4, then the putt will be executed in the swing meter strike zone section that of +3/4, adding five (5) points of power to the putt.

I am equipped with the Titleist Scotty Cameron Phantom X 6 Putter M2 (L98+). The -0.9 difference from the Precision of the putter prevents or minimizes the putters Forgiveness to 'correct' my off-dings.

Looks like we are off with an interesting start.

I do believe this will be a fun and informative discussion here in the Forum AceHoler26.

I sent you a Friend Invite just in case we decide to go Private for whatever reason.

Looking forward to reading of your strategy,

    -Dneirf

Off ding is the only way I ever putted. Similar to @dneirf, with possibly a touch less power. As putters go, I wouldn't use anything with forgiveness over 3, because more forgiveness makes the technique less reliable. The combo of not knowing where inside your "circle of forgiveness" you currently are and having to click further away from ding to get the same line (and needing more power because of it) never sat well with me. Probably why I'm still using the 1st putter I ever bought, despite testing every other stick during free rentals. L35 Ghost rules 🤣🤣🤣. Mind you, L94 should be good as well, I just never found it better than what I have and why spend credits on something, that doesn't make a difference 😉

A putting AVG of 0.58 is incredible.

Not really that good, considering he never left the tee box in about 3 quarters of his rounds. Maxing out by whiffing the ball off the tee does wonders when one's trying to level up 😉

Interesting discussion. Here is my question. In the WGT apparel world, there are articles of clothing that supposedly boost things called Putting Forgiveness and Putting Precision. Let's say you've maxed out these at +80. Has anyone ever tried to figure out what exactly this does for you putting skills? Does it really make a difference or it is just hogwash? Would it make any difference by having in off ding putting?

    Thanks

No idea if these items actually improve the putter or not, but if they do, an off ding putter would have to be a idiot to use any item, which improves forgiveness. On the other hand, I can't think of a down side for better precision, no matter what style of putting one uses.

Good questions and points 'sesky' and 'AnaNikolaj'

I can only confirm that I play better with more accuracy and precision without any enhanced Apparel.

My main purpose for using enhanced Apparel is for the benefit of the XP boosts.

I putt off-ding.  I used the ding method until I was Tour Master or possibly Legend but felt rushed in games with a timer.  Played around with lots of putters after switching. I have quite a collection.  L74 Odyssey was my favorite for quite a while. It's a 3.0 Forgiveness putter. I liked the L86 SeeMore too, but ended up preferring the L74 Odyssey because of its slower Meter.  I know the L55 SeeMore(and prior versions) is well-liked by off-dingers, but I was inconsistent with it.  Thought the L70 Scotty Cameron was a good off-ding putter and maybe even a bit better as a ding putter.  I eventually settled on the L94 Spider. 3.5 Forgiveness on that one, but I wanted to try a 10 scale putter and ended up preferring that scale. I've been givng the ding method another try over the past two or three months while using the L98 Scotty Cameron M2 but have recently found myself drifting back to the off-ding method with it more and more. I don't think I'm putting as well off-ding with it as I did with the L94 Spider.  I'm switching back to the L94 today to see if I'm right about that.  My impression is that the ding method is probably better, but I enjoy the off-ding method much more.

i don't do any calculations when putting other than rough estimates depending on green speed and elevation change or precisely divide the bar into fractions to decide when to strike the ball.  Basically just try to get a sense of how the ball is going to roll and hit it.

Well stated GreenLaser (post: Thu, Feb 20 2025 12:17 PM)

Thought I would Chip-In and add that the Balance of the putter is also important.

The Balance of the putter indicates the accuracy as to how long the putt will stay inline with the target destination. The higher the Balance, the longer the ball will stay on target.

I use the Titleist Scotty Cameron Phantom X 6 Putter M2 (L98+) with a Balance of 4.5 and it holds the line very well for me, especially on very long putts.

As you, I also prefer the 10 scale putter.

I think off-ding putting is more realistic, I mean, we don't just walk up to the cup and move the pin to where we are going to line up our putt. :-)

Post back here and let us know how the L94 worked out for you with off-ding putting.
