Does top spin always add distance to drives

What other advantages/ disadvantages are there to different spins on balls

You always need to adjust the spin based on the wind.

Personally, to gain more distance off the tee, I use backspin with a tailwind, and I go for topspin when facing a headwind.

The key is there isn't a single 'best' spin, it's all about adjusting the type & amount depending on the situation.

EDIT : True that. I also tend to use backspin most of the time, especially with irons.

I'd agree with Simon, although I almost never use topspin (with a few exceptions).  I might apply a click or 2 of topspin at St Andrews or RSG if I think I can hit a mound or slope to get the ball really scooting, but almost always use between 25-75% backspin - depending on the wind.
