Not really looking for advice here, as it is a subject that most people I am sure have their own opinion on... just sharing my thoughts.

Although I have the R11 3wood, as a fairly new Legend, I have gone back to primarily carrying Drvr, 4 CG16's (52,56,60,64), and the R11 irons.

I did this because off of Legend tees, most of the par 5 greens are out of reach without a tailwind, and if there is a tailwind, the R11 3 iron will generally get there.

For me, having the extra control around the green is more important than maybe getting onto a par 5 in 2.

hi mark, i'm sure yankee jim will be posting shortly and offer some advice for he has been successful with the 4 wedge set up.  it seems like there is a little more course management involved but it certainly can be done.  i'm considering 4 wedges as well once i qualify for the r11's.  the only obstacle i see could be a few par 4s that could only be reached with a 3w under certain wind conditions. i guess the question is, would you rather have a very long birdie putt or a guaranteed par? and of course 3wds generally don't have the precision as the upper level 3irons. anyway, ask yj, he would know best and offer some great advice.

    good luck,

    qbal

I've gone both ways on this for a while, Mark. I just recently started carrying the 3W again after a few weeks with 4 wedges just to see how the game changes for me having it. It does help on a few holes but I had gotten so used to all the shots you have up close with 4 wedges that I'm still not convinced I need it. I can count on one hand the number of 5s I've been on in 2 shots with it.

Those Legend winds do make a strong case for carrying it, though.  :-)

I think 3 wedges are plenty, with the variety of shots available and the ability to choke them down. A 3 wood is very useful on the longer par 3's.

I carry 3 wedges too.  The 52° CG seems a bit pointless at 115 yards when the R11 PW hits 120 and my 3 wood gets used on, I think, every course.  Can't think of a course where I don't play a shot with it, the possible exception being St. Andrews with tail wind on the par 5 holes.

It was a bit of a waste of money really.  Kinda like my R11 hybrid, I don't think I've hit a ball with that.

On the surface you would think so but they are entirely different clubs. In fact, when equipping the 3W I keep this instead of the 100. It stops of it's own accord, is very accurate and is very easy to choke but I use it for the 96 yard punch more than anything. That, too, is easy to control and the wind doesn't mess with it as much as the 120 choked to get 105-110. It pretty much covers 85-100+ for me.

There is a 20 yard gap between the CG100 and the R11 set wedge so you find yourself either punching the set wedge or choking to cover 105-115 whereas the 115 lets you take a fuller swing to cover those distances. The punch will roll out if you top spin it so that  96 yards becomes something longer if needed.

I found it real easy to get comfortable with 4 wedges and having to take birdies instead of eagle tries on a limited number of holes. Whatever makes it fun for you.  :-)

With the R 11 set up,  I find the 4 wedges and the 3 wood to work out quite well. Probably because I am never on the Fairway.

I had the 52º 60º and 64º CG wedges before I got the R11 irons this week, and yes , have to agree wiv YJ the 52º is very adaptable for 87 -118 yards and very accurate.

Am still fine tuning the loss of distance out of rough.

Par 3 8th at Oakie needs a 3wd very often, but there again that 3 iron will go like the blazes with a tailwind.

3wd also good for not reaching the rough on #13 STA.
