  Yes, simply click on your friends name, and when there profile page loads, above their name you will see four boxes, block challenges, send message, remove friend or invite to play.

  Click on send message and away you go.

  Alternatively you can post on their wall.

  This of course only appears to work 85% of the time.

  I have attempted to message members of my Country Club, load the page and the options are 

  Invite to CC, Add Friend etc.

  Even clicking on thir name WITHIN the CC list of members , still can offer the option of inviting to the club

  Had you read the op more carefully, you would have seen the word friend, ie can I email a friend, the situation you refer to is when you click on a profile of someone who is not a friend.
