Need some help to understand how the average score is calulated, as I have never really taken much notice of it before

The reason I am asking is that I managed to shoot a 61 on St Andrews in a CC tournament, my lowest ever, I was expecting the average score to drop but it did not. I thought this might be something to do with an issue I have read where sometimes your avaerage does not drop until the next level

I waited until I levelled up and still nothing, the next stroke play game I played I scored a 35 avaerage dropped from 68.39 to 68.38

So why did nt it drop when I shot the 61 or am I missing something, both of the stroke play games where CC tournaments

    Any advice appreciated

No one really knows how the average scores are calculated as the algorithm has never been made public. Prior to September 2010, our scoring average was based on the best 10 of the last 14 rounds. Now, everything resets when we enter a new tier...averages are not suppose to go up (except in the beginning) when you have a bad round, nor go down drastically because to a few exceptional rounds. Lowering your average has more to do with frequency of play when you show you can actually play at that level and you are ready to advance to the next level.

This game is designed to encourage you to play more...by doing so, you will get better and WGT makes more money. It's a two way street so do what is best for you.

The average has nothing to do with the level. It is calculated from a number of the best rated (!) scores which you played in your tier. After a level-up, it starts from scratch.

Your av. must have moved with that 61 score, i.e. from 68,72 to 68,39. I suppose you just didn't notice it.

Meanwhile, you have reached the state where youre average will only drop until Tour Pro.

This form of simple averaging was closer to how our average scores were calculated prior to Sept 2010. Today's averages are the result of a new system that gives more weight to rounds played earlier in a new tier and factors in frequency of play...and to answer the OP's question, that's why averages don't move much no matter what we do.

My advice, to new players, is to not concentrate on your average...play your best, don't cherry pick best rounds, play all the courses, play as many 18 hole rounds as you play 9 hole rounds, and play outside your country club once in a while. Do this and your average will take care of itself and you'll play in a tier that is best for you.

Mind you, this "simple" calculus works fine & precise for me, too, in all cases applied. No weighing in sight.

    Full ACK!

All the "bad" rounds add to a player's knowledge and experience and fall out of the average as soon as there are enough good rounds.

From my stats, finally there was no 76 in the race to become a Tour Pro
and no par round to become a Master.
