The direct quote from Mark Russell rules official who was there states,

“A gentleman saw the ball land and roll, and another gentleman verified he saw the same thing,

” Woods said. “There were about five or six people that ran over to the ball, and the next thing you know we get down there and there’s hundreds of people and no ball. You saw an area there, there’s really nothing there. We looked around for a while, and then Mark came over there and analyzed the situation and what was going on. We gave him all the information. The two gentlemen participated in the conversation, and we dropped it as close as we could to where they thought it was picked up.

    “So that was it.”

The referee refereed properly according to the rules of golf and the rest is history.

And tiger is quickly becoming history on the golf course too. None too soon.

Remember when Westwood and Stricker were history?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless if they have an axe to grind or not. This thread was started because  of the misconception that Tiger was getting preferential treatment from the rules officials.

After that was cleared up in the officials' favour and the game continued some people saw the forlorn chance of dipping into their personal hate bag to score points against a player or players who they disliked. I suppose it is their prerogative to hate someone regardless of the facts, LOL.

Whatever, I don't think that Tiger will lose much sleep on the opinions of some disgruntled people.

Also is is hard to be history when the 2 players mentioned are currently lying in 3rd and 6th places respectively on the worlds ranking list.

Just a refresher on how much money is up for grabs for example at the Masters. How many years of work would it take a "fan" to accumulate these figures at their work?

    1st: $1,305,000
    2nd: $783,000

    42nd: $28,275
    43rd: $26,825
    44th: $25,375

Don't forget these guys are playing for these sums on a weekly basis. Maybe that could be a small reason for the green eyed monsters getting their assumptions in the way of the facts?

Tiger finished his worst ever position as a professional in 40th place at this years Masters and collects $ 31,175. Only about $7793 a day.

What assumptions are you posting about? Did any of the many spectators that were there report seeing someone picking up and stealing the ball?

If it couldn't be confirmed that someone actually stole the ball then it must be considered a lost ball.

Now, does this precedent mean the next time I play and hit a ball in the woods or the water I can consider it a "stolen" ball, since some day someone may come along and find my ball in the woods or scoop it out of the water?

Oh, and since the last time I saw that "stolen" ball it was flying straight and true to the green, can I then drop the ball within 10 ft of the hole?

The referee refereed properly according to the rules of golf and the rest is history.

When a ball goes into the rough on tour there are ALWAYS spectators running to where the ball is to form a circle around the ball so as they can get a good view of the player taking their next shot. It would be a bit presumptious to suggest  that the spectators ran over to the ball and form a circle around the ball if it wasn't  there.

The referee acted on the information he was given by at least 2 spectators and acted accordingly to the situation and continued by the rules of golf.

If enough haters of a golfer band together and position theirselves around the course then anytime they get a chance to pocket a ball of the said golfer then they would make sure he would never win again. Lost ball Referee, no free drop, where would the game head then?
