Was that a UK headcover?  Maybe WGT put him up to it as a sneak peek or reminder (of sorts) to the British Open.  :-D

its who can put it together for 4 rounds around a course set up to test the best. Webb won it fair and square congrats to the fella. You have to be in it to win it, he was and did. To call him a no name is harsh

3 pga wins and 23 top ten finishes in two years not to forget the $11,300,000 winnings and now the world No5. some noname.

Simpson is a true no name only to those who don't follow the tour closely.  He doesn't get the press of Ricky Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mayhan, etc. but he is a very good player and has been for a while.

The Open was disappointing to me, I am one of the few who think this course is a horrid course to play the Open on.  It is more or less a tricked up course, doglegs that have fairways that slope incorrectly, 2 very short par four holes, one monster par five (and the tee change they made on Sunday was terrible - made you have to hit a 3 wood snap hook off the tee), trees that require you to hit over them, yet if you do you might end up with a ball up the tree.

The wind was pretty tame and the green speed never looked up to US Open levels to me, the slopes may have made it impossible.  I recall the putt that cost Payne Stewart the Open here was caused by unfair undulations in the greens (they took that extra level off the green for this year).

I'll be glad to see the Open return to Winged Foot, Pinehurst, etc. in the future.

Is the British Open set up the same way as the US Open where anybody can qualify?

The reason these winners seem to breeze in as 'no-names' is that the field of quality players is extremely deep. Any one of them could win in a given day or week. They seem like no-names because there are just too many names to remember. Some are better than others at capturing the imagination of the public.

Which is why it was so amazing when Tiger Woods was able to dominate the game, once upon a time, and why it is unlikely that he, or anyone else, will do so again.

Simpson won by playing better than anyone else. There is no other way.

PS. The Bird-Man seems a lot more clever than your typical TV sports commentator.

Anyone can enter the Open provided they have a low enough handicap which I believe is scratch or thereabouts. They then have to play through the various qualifiers to try and win a place. I caddied at Lundin Links in the 1984 qualifying event. The guy I caddied for missed out by 2 shots after taking a 6 at the 18th.
