    pmm,

Funny you should mention that about Nicklaus clubs. As a matter of fact, I still use Nicklaus irons (MacGregor MCX from the early '80s). They're still excellent clubs but, yeah, Jack would hit them a tad bit better.

I think you're wrong about the percentage of players here who also play in real life. I would bet it's far higher than 5-10 percent.

Yes, there are two kinds of players here, golfers and gamers. And it's not too hard to sort out which is which when you're playing against them.

    Or even the opposite.

I played a lot of golf but stopped for around 6 year, then i  found this game and it got me back into playing IRL again.

Until operation has stopped me for last year to two. But aim is to get back shortly.

On that note of playing again, i will know my limits. No 36 holes a day and no playing 3 or 4 times a week, just once a week will suffice for me now, i can be addicted to this in its place.

    ;-)

    K7...

I'm talking about the "WGT Elite"...the Top 50-100 players...like the ones shooting 53/54/55 in the VUSO...those dudes/dudettes are pure, hardcore gamers except for a select few...at least that's my gut feel.

    And Bubbs...

I concur...this game has gotten me back on the RL circuit again too.  That along with my son who enjoys whacking balls around.  My brother, Andy, who died of AML in February 2016, and I used to golf every year in Washington DC with the Wounded Warriors.  What a great time that was...truly inspiring.  I stopped playing for a bit after he died.  Now my son, who belongs to a CC, has got me out more and more.  That bonding time, talking about his uncle, discussing life...well that's become PRICELESS.

When I was in the Military you would pay for a monthly membership to military golf courses by Rank.  So back in 1995 when I was only an E4 it cost me around 22$ a month.  I was stationed in Hawaii at the time so unlimited golf at KauKau (on Schofield) and Leilehua (off base) for $20 something bucks a month.

When I wasn't deployed or in the field I had tons and tons of 54 hole+ days.  I was using Tommy Armour 855 Silver Scotts.  After that I went to the original Titleist DCI forged Irons and paired them with Taylor Made Bubble Shaft Driver/Wood combo.  King Cobra oversized followed that.

I just started playing again about 1 week ago at a 9hole local course and having some fun.

    Hey Sean,

I was stationed in Hawaii and assigned to CINCPAC (@ Camp Smith) from December '71 thru June  '74.  I played a lot on the beach front course @ Hickam AFB.  I payed $10 per month as an E4 and $20 per month as an E5 for an unlimited play green fee card..

We worked rotating shifts so I had 3 1/2 days off every 8 days and we would play at least 18 holes on each of those 3 days.  Kiawah makes me think of that course at Hickam, and some fine times with the mates I shared an apartment with out on that course.  I played with a set of Wilson's at that time.

I know I'm just another dinosaur remembering the "Good Old Days".

    Cheers Mate,

    Jeff

The majority of people apparently have no idea, what VEM is and how it works. Let's try to explain.

Every club has a circle of precision and a circle of forgiveness. The ball can land anywhere in the circle of precision, when the shot is dinged. Let's say the circle is 4 yards in diameter for a 4i. That means that a "perfect" shot can land anywhere inside 4 yards of the pin, left, right, long or short. All depends where in that circle the programme is. that's why there can be an 8 yards difference in length (but almost never is) with the same shot.

The circle of forgiveness only comes into play, when the ding is missed. It can only move your shot left or right. The bigger the forgiveness, the less the centre of the circle of precision will shift to either left or right, depending on if you're early or late. The distance will also be less affected by a miss, when your forgiveness level is high.

NOW, to explain what VEM does. When the game detects a significant improvement in your scores, your circle of precision gets bigger. let's say, if it was 4 yards before, it's now 5. So your "perfect" shot can land a yard further from the hole than before. At the same time, your circle of forgiveness shrinks (smaller sweet spot). So a missed ding can result in a larger sideways shift of your circle of precision.

But, when the game detects your game is stagnant, or even becoming worse, the VEM starts working in the opposite direction. The circle of precision gets smaller (balls land closer to the pin on "perfect" shots) and the forgiveness level increases.

Very well explained. I've certainly experienced it myself and the better you play, the more VEM comes into play. It leads me to another question, though.

How is it possible that some top-ranked players constantly shoot low mid 50s one after another? Doesn't VEM work for those guys? Don't tell me they're excellent putters although they are indeed because it alone doesn't explain the reason why they always score low. I mean... Look at their average distance to pin. They're within 9 feet or 10 feet at worst! It means they bring the ball within 3-yard range to the pin ALL THE TIME no matter what! It happens to me that I place my ball within 6 feet and less in a round, but soon after, VEM throws me off way over 15 feet and so. I do everything the same, calculation, shot routine, EVERYTHING but I still can't get away from VEM. How can they?? Maybe it's the real secret of the game.

Can the VEM detect if you are playing practice games or ranked? I would gladly go hack out a few 100 scores if I knew the good VEM would be coming to visit me when I entered a tournament round, lol. :-)
