Truly shocking news....and again at a school. Not too long ago it was some crackpot opening fire in a cinema.
I know there will be many Americans disagreeing with what I have to say but I think it's way past time gun control got tightened dramatically in the states.
It's time to get guns off the streets. Keep them in the homes. By all means bear arms to defend your property at all costs from intruders etc.
Elementary schools....not forgetting the adults who died....these were kids aged between 5 & 10 years old....and their lives have been heinously ended before they've even had a chance.
Unless something is done to remove guns from being carried around on the streets, we're only going to keep seeing more and more of these monstrous acts of depravity.
I understand it's an american's right to bear arms but if everyone wants to go round carrying a gun to protect themselves from whaco's, then this problem will never diminish...and on the contrary it's more likely to increase.....just as we are seeing with school shootings over the past 13 years since Columbine.
With approximately 300 million folks in the US....who's a whaco? who's not?....too difficult and time consuming to judge. Best way forward is a blanket ban and to outlaw guns from being carried around in open society.
I'm not here to argue for or against the gun lobby......All I do know is that something clearly needs done to make societies a safer place to live. I say societies because gun crimes are a global issue. The same thing happened in Dunblane & Hungerford here in the UK.
The Dunblane school massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996. The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton (b. 10 May 1952), entered the school armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre and the 2010 Cumbria shootings, it remains one of the worst criminal acts involving firearms in the history of the United Kingdom.
Public debate subsequent to these events centred on gun-control laws, including media-driven public petitions calling for a ban on private ownership of handguns and an official enquiry, the Cullen Report. In response to this debate, the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 and the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 were enacted, which effectively made private ownership of handguns illegal in the United Kingdom.
America should take a lead from this.
My deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to all the families grieving their lost loved ones tonight.
My condolences also go out to parents who now face the tough task of trying to help those kids who were lucky enough to get away today but who will now inevitabley go through years of anguish and will need counselling.
