    Corwyn:

    Hi Gary,

No mistake. It is 'Fast' greens for St Andrews.

There's less variety this time around, for sure. In planning these tourneys (and we've done 3 now, including a Better Ball one in our cc), we're generally trying to respect the courses natural defenses.

For the British Links courses, their best defense is Wind. So we've set St A and RSG with High and Moderate winds. And typically, we've had the green speed a little slower to compensate (and to mimic a wet and windy day where you might have a better chance of holding a green with a slightly slower green speed). However, last time around, so many players complained about putting on 'treacly' Standard speed at St A's that I moved it up a notch there this time.

For the U.S. Open courses, they typically have more brutal rough, and lightening-quick greens. So, we've always set those at the faster end of the green speeds. I've been reluctant to set either of them to Tournament green speed though, as they're hard enough right now at Very Fast to hit and hold with Starters.

I'd be interested to hear other people's perspective, and suggestions for the future...

In this tourny I think the conditions are plenty hard enough without tourny greens, lol. I can't believe how unforgiving starter putter is - a fraction off the ding and I miss on a straight in putt. I'm used to sinking 80+ ft in a rd but did poorly at Oakmont. Think SA will be easier

St. Andrews is no picnic. Depending on the wind some holes you cannot even come close to the green in 3 shots.

I'm having the same problem. Miss the ding and right by the hole every time.

Yes, I see that now by playing two more holes. It only counts the second putt as the distance.

    Thanks for your reply

Actually the word "made" is meant in its meaning of "converted". That saying, the it represents the length of all putts that dropped in the hole.

    Cheers, Hans

Well, johehejo and I just finished our very tough slog around Oakmont. Boy, if you're not striking the ball well, it gets very stressful just hanging in there... and we had an awful lot of wind-in-our-face holes (the only ones we got a good wind on we didn't want it, e.g. #11).

Johehejo was pretty solid throughout in his 81, but really struggled with the starter putter and came in with 38 putts.

I had an extraordinary round of 72, some holes played just beautifully but some absolute disasters in there too, including a horrible meter-stutter on #2 leading to Red-box lie hell and a double. I had a stretch across the middle of the round where I just couldn't hit the ding at all, especially off the tee. 71% driving accuracy is not the way to score well. So, I'll be the first to admit I got very lucky to post a score this good, even though I missed a 2 footer, three 8 footers, and two more at 12 and 13 foot.

However, I also hit some gorgeous shots that saved the day for me, including these 3 WGT Instant Replays (I've never had more than one in a round before):

#1: Flop approach to save par

#9: the textbook wedge shot to have a chance of saving par (but I missed the scary huge side-break 2 footer, arrggghh!)

#17: Eagle from the fairway: 97% pwr PW with full bs, slight upslope, with slight side slope and wind... perfect!

... and some other fine shots helped too: #3 punch LW to 1yd;   #5 soft stun with half bs to run nicely over ridge to 6ft;  #11 very lucky par-saving bunker shot that almost went in ;  and long approach on #18, one of only 3 holes with helping wind, to 13ft... but I missed that putt too!

Here is my screenshot set, with Johehejo's to follow:

Phew... really glad that's over, and that I haven't put myself out of it. As they say in the Majors, you can't win in the first round, but you can give yourself too much to do to catch up...

Tomorrow I will try again maybe for even longer as it is a Saturday, but if not then I am done.

You've been offline the past hour and a half Joe, will try for you tomorrow.

Had a nice practice with Neil and we both did beat par on the front 9. This round might be a great scoring opportunity guys, get the putters ready!

    Cheers, Hans

    Yeah enjoyed that.

If you keep it in play and get the right wind on certain holes (#7 for instance) then it's down to putting.

This format could be a perfect simulation if there was a little more spin on the wedges and the UL wasn't such a joke around the green or in bunkers. It was just like real links golf, playing for roll out to certain areas and taking the chances on the "easier" holes.

    Cheers Hans, well played.
