It certainly is a legal shot.

I personally have never been overly impressed to see someone chipping on a green, especially in real golf. Personal preference I suppose.

While this is not a common thing, it does happen in real golf.  Most of us are not good enough or inclined to take a 60 degree wedge out to go over a strip of fringe on a real course, the fear of taking out a chunk of green is enough to stop us.   However you see some of the pros do this fairly often when presented with a shot that makes it so you can't go at the home otherwise.

Frankly my experience in WGT land is that I am much better at getting the ball closer to the hole with my putter than my wedge, at least from 70 to 80 feet.  Once you get over 100 feet it is probably about even for me.  Since WGT took some of the spin options, etc. off this shot it has become less and less used.

I'm not a fan of the shot but it is legal and should be left alone as long as WGT is able to make it as difficult as it would be in real golf.   I did watch a tour pro during a golf outing in Florida hit a 64 degree wedge off a tight green to a pin about 75 feet away and barely scuff the green.   He asked me to try it and after skulling 3 shots into a pine thicket, I was able to lose my fear of hitting the ball fat and pick a couple, however I could still get my putter much closer.  In my mind it's only a shot of last resort.

It would be interesting if WGT were to implement a mode where only a putter is allowed on greens, maybe have a mix where one tourney allows any club and others allow only a putter to be used.

One thought on this whole argument is:

is it skillful to refuse to use the wedge and stick with using a putter?

    or

is it skillful to master putter but use wedge to get same/better results?

Seeing as it's legal, it's just a matter of skill I would think - however, I will stick with my putter for now :)

Anyhow, how about this shot to make a greenkeeper wince...

Yes it is legal,  but tell me something? what is a bigger thrill.  putting in a difficult 65 yarder ,  or chipping on the green  the same distance . I think putting in a difficult one is a great feeling in my book .             Frapp                       PS:  i  dont play much  with a player i know  use a Wedge on the green,  and thats my choice.)

Think WGT should ban any type of chipping or using a driver on the green. U dont do it in real golf then u shouildnt do it here, and yes if  i was a ground crew i would dump all your balls, both in your bag and in your pants and run them over with my mower.

You don't shoot 56's and such in real golf either...it's just a game.  Do you think they should ban flop shots that stop on a dime for the average player as well. Much of this game is far from realistic.  I play the putting blitz (not for credits) a lot and only use wedges.....I use it as a warm up before playing alt shot, etc...to get fixed in on the meter...and, I always ask if the other players object if I use wedges...if they do, I usually drop before it starts......besides...it gives you a different challenge as most players have had every shot on every hole on every course...many times over.

In response for the growing concern over a major issue, a group has been formed to combat the indecency. P.E.T.G, People for The Ethical Treatment of Greens has been formed to prevent the mutilitation and defamation of Green surfaces everywhere. By encouraging more use of the proper tools, a.k.a  The Putter, and verbally flogging the sinister utilization of any bladed club.

This behavior is contributing to the lack of sleep of greenskeepers everywhere, and tearing up the hallowed surfaces on which we roll. Please join us in the movement to end this unethical and harmful practice.                    Sincerely  P.E.T.G

A lot of greens aren't even 65yds in diameter :) Besides, ever since WGT removed the spin option from wedge shots on the green, I would say its much easier to hole a mid-range putt than to hit a wedge shot on the green from the same distance. I've not hit a wedge shot on the green since.

65 yrds is just a number representing a long putt .  And just the other day i played with a CC member ,and all is wedge  shot on the green where one to two feet away from the hole,so removing the spin option by   WGT did not change  anything much i feel .  But its my opignion, and this is virtuel  so people do what  they want , i choose not to use Wedge on the green ,and once i know this and that player use it always  i dont play them or accept invite  ect . It still my choice.:)

The lack of spin has greatly affected how accurately you can judge distance with the wedge. It's now only really useful for getting an easy par putt when you get into a tight spot, as it should be. It used to be ridiculously easy to hole-out steep downhill breakers with the unrealistic stopping power.

Just to be clear I'm not suggesting players chip on the green. IMO its much easier to learn how to putt properly.  It is your choice whether you would like to avoid such players, but personally I think all they are doing is putting themselves at a disadvantage.
