Hi all you seasoned golfers out there,  I have a question to ask and would be interested in what players think.

I took my second shot  on the 14th hole on St Andrews and because the wind was against me I hit my ball left of the fairway over the rough onto the next  fairway and then had a message come up telling me that my ball was  out of bounds ?  for which I lost it.

According to the rules of golf as I am aware, there should be white marker posts  displaying where the out of bounds line is  and  as such on this  hole there is no such  thing.

If this is correct which i am sure it is , then wgt have robbed me  and probably lots of other players of their balls.

Perhaps one of the moderators would care to explain the reason for this Ball Robbery as I have sent 2 messages to wgt and they do not appear to be interested in answering them.

As much as i would like 2 agree its robbery,(bin robbed on many holes myself) i,m afraid this time it is not, u have got 2 play that shot just right or else u will be in more trouble, heavy wind at ST Andys can land you with shots u wudn,t normally have 2 play.

This is WGT,s description of that hole & i quote

The 14th is appropriately named as the longest hole on the Old Course. Aim to the left of the wall and to the right of the Beardies. The second shot could be played onto a portion of the 5th fairway to the left of Hell Bunker, but beware of going out of bounds there. Your approach will do well to hold the green which slopes sharply from front to back.....

I,m not a real life golfer, dont know the rules, but i do watch it & the pros can look for their balls, even play outa water, but we have on here no option, ball lost is ball lost grrrrrr

I've done the same thing myself. Same results. Sucks, but it is what it is. Some games let you play it from there (twg and links2003) others don't  for various reasons, namely programming issues.

Check this thread out  on a similar situation same hole.Interesting read.

well I finally got a response back from wgt, they told me that I am correct in what i said about there not  being white  out of bounds marker posts and that the game was wrong to take my ball, therefore they kindly returned a replacement ball  to me.

Very good of them I must say, All I need from them now is to correct the game deviation that they placed on my games  so that I  can have a little bit more control back over my shots.

    Well done wgt.

I can assure you that many others have lost their golf balls attempting a similar shot on that hole.(myself included) Although your ball came to rest in the middle of the left portion of the fairway it is deemed out of bounds in this game.

When attempting that shot in the future try to hug the right side (of the left portion of fairway) to make sure your ball is safely in play.

In real golf the O.B. area is designated by posts but in this game it is defined a bit differently. If you look at the picture of the hole, on the right side of your screen, while your ball is in flight you will see that it goes too far to the left and comes to rest beyond what wgt has defined as that particular hole. Hence out of bounds.

in real life you can play that shot. ive had the pleasure of playing the old lady three times. same as first hole. hit the burn you can pick out and drop but under wgt rules lost balls on both times. unfair but thats there game play.

The mini-map on the right of the screen is the boundary. Hit it off the little map and it's considered OB even if it's in the middle of the left fairway. There's other holes on St A and one on Oakmont that sometimes we play that way but you have to be very careful.

So bottom line, you weren't robbed. You willfully hit the ball outside the boundary and lost it. We've all done it and now we know.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think deviation is the biggest concern at that level. Unless you can shoot regularly in the 50's, you're probably not capable of knowing when something is wrong. I'm a Legend and I can only remember maybe one or two bad shots that I don't think were my fault.

Theres no deviation, its probably a misconception of how the game works, in simple terms, just because you ding a shot it doesn't mean it will go straight (regardless of wind direction),

Picture a 5c piece, 10c piece and 20c piece and so on.

assume that there is zero wind.. which of course never happens..

If you ding a shot toward your target, and your distance is exactly correct, your ball will land somewhere within the vascinity of the 5c piece. Depending on how far you miss your ding/target by, will determine the maximum possible landing area (eg. 50c piece), this is why it is possible to miss the ding, and still go dead straight, or vice versa, this maintains the randomness of the game..

I hope this helps a few minds
