I'm no expert on the use of spin on the new R1 driver but this is what I have found.
On courses like STA and RSG all bets are off since sometimes you can use the top spin when you are down wind to ding the ball 400 yards.
The R1 has a lower loft and hits the ball lower than the R11 so generally I find that leaving the spin in the neutral position gives you a decent ball flight and good distance. With a moderate wind behind 10 to 15 mph, the backspin seems to get a nice carry and the best distance.
Into a moderate wind I have found that leaving the spin neutral gets you about 290 yards on the normal courses.
I would love for some of the really good players to weigh in on this so that us hacks can learn how to better utilize this new weapon.
It is long, I had a 25 mph wind mostly behind me on STA 18 yesterday and hit the ball into the rough behind the green, think it went 385. The distance says 287 but with moderate quality balls, I find that I am averaging 300 yards and it is very straight.
