Two times in the past few days I hit those scary UK bunkers, ending up at the base of the stone walls. I was not able to get out of there either time. I tried chipping, flopping, punching, etc. I tried hitting lower on the ball. I tried a variety of clubs. I took half swings. Both times I reached the maximum shots limit. Any suggestions?

Turn to the side or back. Once you're stuck in those earthen (not stone) walls, there's hardly another chance.

At least you have one here. IRL, it may cost more than one shot, unless you choose the zero shot option.

Needless to say, a more expensive wedge would probably have got you out.

    +1

I have played St A's and several links courses in Scotland where the bunkers are hell if you get close to the face. As a caddy once said to me, "ye cannay get oot dat way laddie"

But as Courteney says, better wedges give you a better chance, but play percentages and get the ball back into play.

Thank you x 3. I guess if I stop aiming straight ahead...

Also, thanks for the correction on the bunkers. I thought that was stone!

I took a deeper look, and found this pic from STA New Course:

It's from an old greenkeeper's blog, see in the lower section, May 6th to May 13th, 2009.

Also read this more detailled description with photos.

Then you have never been right up next to the wall in one of the pot bunkers. Not even the best Cleveland wedge will get you out going forward with any type of shot. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and turn around and hit it out backwards or sideways.
