Maybe this is a bit selfish since my first appearance here is asking for help

Not even, pp, that's exactly why the forum is here. You got a lot of punch advice here and that's great, it will soon become a favorite shot. However, you shouldn't lose sight of the other shots you can use with them.

The theory on three wedges is that you use them way more than you would use that HB. Punching the 3i or 3w gets you out of the same trouble as the HB. That and the coverage you get for the short game. Each club has 5 shots you can use with it-5 different distances-so with 3 wedges you add 15 shots to your game! I used 4 wedges and a driver until I got to Legend.

Read the Pitch and Chip tips in the FAQs. It was written by WGTIcon when he was Iconian and you'll get knowledge you'll use for as long as you play. Learn how to use the pitches and chips, they're invaluable and you'll sink more of them than you will with a punch or flop. They're finicky shots but worth mastering.  GL

... and don't forget that you can punch with any club. Not only is it useful out of rough. but as it provides a lower trajectory it's good to use to get under overhanging trees.

it took me a long time to discover the value of the punch shot. now you are way ahead of my learning curve !! you can also punch a 3 wood out of the second cut of rough when your attempted drive goes astray. don't be afraid to experiment ! some tricks i've learned are from mis-hits. learn from your mistakes also !! the more you play the better you will get. don't take the game too seriously and have fun.

    Rightyright! (spelling?)

Add some topspin and make sure to have plenty of fairway ahead - it runs like a herd of Bisons!

I read your post on the punch shot and it never even crossed my mind to use it from a bunker. Can't wait to practice that to see if it helps....

    Thanks again.

i sincerely hope that people learn from this post !! the forums are an invaluable teaching and learning aide. i know that i have picked up some tips from this thread too. i have never had too much luck punching out of green side bunkers but I'm willing to give it a try. another thing I never tried was to punch a driver from the fairway. i still haven't had the opportunity to use this in game mode and i never would have thought about it until i played a round with two of this games legends and one of them mentioned that shot. i am looking forward to trying it out when the opportunity arises. play often - have fun !!

Great advice. The best is learning to use all 5 different shots with wedges.

Anybody here drive it in the rough on occasion? At what range of rough do you use the punch shot. I'm good with the 3H punch from the rough but not much else.

Punch is often best choice for ruff and you can hit everything from 3wood to lob wedge, depending on your needs. Nestle the spin dot on your lie indication just into the top of the grass, to ensure you get it UP and out.

My rule of thumb: you'll lose a few yds in 25%, 9 or 10 yds from 30/40, and ~15 yds in 40/50. Anything deeper and ydg lost mounts quickly - from 70/80 rough it might be 90% lost. In the deeper than 50% stuff use a punched wedge and aim for the nearest fairway you can find and reach - even if it's sideways!.

Remember that punch shots (excepting wedges and shorter clubs) have less carry and more roll, so you have to experiment with YOUR clubs and balls to find out the % carrry vs % roll from different lies ... no sense in punching towards the pin if your carry lands you in more rough, lol.

Well let me give you an example - On #4 Kiawah I often make that little error that puts your drive in that nasty rough when you run out of fairway. Even a yard in gives you 40-50% - so I used the tip from the poster that helped me calculate distance loss - punched an iron to just in front of the green - flopped it to a foot using the tip to hit left of the dinger - and saved my par. I hate that hole - but it is much more conquerable with the help from the smarter players here! I also used the punch from that awkward (for me) 70y distance - what a difference!

Glad I asked the questions....Thanks to all!
